Into The Twilight

INTO-THE-TWLIGHT-TO-THE-LAP-OF-NATURE: Few public figures have been vocal proponents of animal rights. At a time where there is increased animal-human conflict and in most urban places, street animals are seen as a nuisance, it is important to take a step back for us to as humans to understand and believe that we are part of the ecosystem and NOT owners of the ecosystem.

The Moari King of New Zealand, Kīngi Tūheitia, born Tūheitia Paki, died in August 2024. The institution that he represented stood for rights of the Indigenous people in a land that was once owned by their forefathers, but later colonized by the British Crown. Today, the indigenous are but a minority; they continue to fight for the survival of their identity and culture. New Zealand is one of the few countries that has passed laws granting legal status to natural features such as rivers and mountains that are important to the Maori people. And to further this symbiotic relationship, the Maori King had called for Whales to be given personhood. He had made a call for Whales to be granted the same legal rights as people in a bid to protect the vulnerable marine animal. They deserve the same inherent human rights, such as a healthy environment, to allow restoration of their population. The sketch represents the relationship the King cared for.
